The Marriage Plague

Divorce is NOT the basic problem… "Marriage" is the foundational problem

The problem of Christians and divorce is one which is gaining more attention all the time.  According to the research done by the Barna Research Group, over 27% of all Christian couples end up in divorce court.

There is such tragic fallout from "Christians and divorce: spousal love and dreams lost, spouses deeply wounded (men and women  wounded spiritually, financially, emotionally and even physically), public shame and backbiting, children caught in the "crossfire", bankruptcy, depression and discouragement… These and much more follow in the wake of a divorce.

What we were to tell you that none of the above is the real problem ? Would you be surprised? Actually, we have found that Christians know there is something wrong – at the foundational level of our current expression in the "faith community" – which gives us many problems, including high correlations between "Christians and divorce" statistics…But, most of the Christian community simply cannot not put a finger on the problem.

We are content to speak in generalities such as "lack of obedience," "lack of holiness", "pride", "the need for greater love" and many such expressions. These, though true enough, have always been true – even in ages where "Christians and divorce" were not issues.

The Problem we face is NOT one of divorce among Christians… If anything, Christians and divorce rates are simply (and tragically) the result of another far more prevalent problem found among Christians, endorsed all too often in the pulpits and Christian counseling centers, and generally accepted as fact in the churches.

As you will see, the churches have not always believed this way… Consequently, the churches have not always had the a problem with "Christians and divorce", certainly not at such record rates.

This blog will challenge thinking Christian people. We will endeavor to bring up all sorts of issues for debate and discussion. We are presenting the problems which confront Christians and divorce no doubt. But, we are approaching that issue (Christians and divorce) from the standpoint of another problem… the failure of what might be called "The Picture.

We do reserve one point with which we will not part. The Bible – the Old and New Testaments in their entirety – constitute the whole Word of God. As such, the Bible has been given to us as the final Standard. What it says is final. Obviously, interpretations will differ. THAT IS A PROBLEM WE WILL ADDRESS THROUGHOUT the blog.
